KIDS' TOYS - Tip 3

The last 2 posts have been on organizing your children's toys. I want to uncover the reason why I suggested baskets rather than bins. I will do that here and in the next post:

Tip 3:

1. Light weight and easy to carry.

The baskets I referred to in the last post are light weight, light enough and usually easy enough to be carried by a preschooler. Your preschooler can practice independence, getting the basket out or putting one away himself.

(Of course, some can become heavy, for instance if you have Hot Wheels cars. Apply common sense.)

2. The right size.

These small dollar store baskets are just the right shape for fitting into most bookshelves and cupboards side by side. They also line up nicely in the bottom of a closet, and are light enough for a child to slide them around.

As they sit open on a shelf or in a cupboard, the child doesn't have to fight with a lid making it easy to retrieve just the items wanted without removing the entire basket.

3. Visibility.

Bins with lids or made of opaque plastic create a barrier to identifying the contents unless well-labelled.

These open type dollar store baskets make jumping into play easily as a child is enticed into play through visual curiosity.

Children can have various baskets sitting beside them during play, and see into them for accessing the right toy pieces.

When you use open baskets that are easily accessed by the children, the calls for mom or dad's help will hopefully be reduced, and an atmosphere of thriving creativity is fostered.
